Day 2: 1 Jan 2012 – Lizard chasing day

We stayed in the Voluntary Guest House, chosen because we were volunteering and we thought it might be nice to meet other volunteers during our stay. We met no other volunteers during our stay. Or indeed, any other guests at all. The only other guests we spotted were three lizards, who rather cleverly managed to stay in our room without paying. You can see one of these devilish fiends scuttling in this picture.

So Wendy sent Sanjay on a lizard chasing mission. Or rather, Sanjay offered, as Wendy is insistent on pointing out as Sanjay is typing this at the moment. So Sanjay enlisted the help of his trusted companion Vannak, who, when not courageously venturing on lizard chasing missions, has a sideline job as manager of the Voluntary Guest House.

Armed with our trusty weapons (broomstick handles) we tapped out carefully designed patterns on the walls to chase the lizards out of the windows. It was hard, daring, life-threatening work. OK, maybe it wasn’t actually life-threatening. Or daring. Or even that hard. But we did it. Mostly.

PS we also saw Angkor Wat today, which is the largest and one of the most stunning pieces of religious architecture in the world.
